COVID Cases Rising In Guwahati: GMCH Superintendent

Guwahati: The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma on Monday asserted that the COVID-19 cases in Guwahati are rising as the city is the hub of the northeast region.

He said this while addressing media today and also asserted that people are failing to maintain social distancing due to which more people are getting infected.

He also urged people to wear masks and follow all COVID protocols so that they can keep themselves away from COVID infections.

Notably, as of date, the Kamrup metro reported 490 COVID cases of a total of 988 cases alone. Interestingly, there were no reports of new omicron cases in the state.

Commenting further, on the rising cases in the city, he also added that there are several reasons and one of the reasons is that people are not taking guidelines seriously issued by the government.

Later, Sarma speaking on the death rate, said that this time the rate is much lower as compared to the second wave, adding, ''One should not take omicron lightly.

Recently, COVID hotspots were found in Guwahati's Chandmari, Rajgarh, and Maligaon neighbourhoods due to a rapid spike in COVID-19 cases in these areas, according to Sarma.

The majority of those infected with the virus were discovered to be residents of these localities, according to the GMCH.

"Recently, substantial numbers of Covid19 cases have been reported in Chandmari, Rajgarh, and Maligaon," he stated.

Due to the ongoing Book Fair at the Assam Engineering Institute playground, the Chandmari region has seen a surge in crowds and traffic in recent days. Maligaon is a congested and densely populated area, and Rajgarh is a neighbouring area to Chandmari itself.

Meanwhile, along with the rest of the country booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for frontline workers and the elderly are being administered in Assam as well.

The booster vaccination drive began at multiple health centres of Assam from 10 AM today.
